Semester Two, page 20
part #2 of The Bloodwood Academy Shifter Series
“We are past that. Now, we use what we have to defeat him. All of us…”
“Or just me,” I cut him off, wolf pressing against my sternum as I took a deep breath. “It’s my duty to stand up for my pack. For my mate.”
I was firm, determined, thankfully he didn’t look away. He stared at me, jaw tight, eyes angry.
Although at that time I was sure the anger wasn’t for me.
“Okay,” I nodded. “I kill the bastard. But then I am tracking down my parents. This is their mess, I’ll be damned if they leave me to clean it up without them.”
“They owe you allowance at least,” Scarlet said with a roll of her eyes.
I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I never got that anyway.
“Sounds like a--”
“Ivy!” Tommy’s voice echoed down the halls, rippling off stone as his footsteps vibrated through the caves. “Ivy!”
We were all on our feet in an instant, my muscles tight as my magic pulsed through them, ready to face whatever enemy that demon brought down here.
Why the fuck was he bringing them down here anyway? The demon pressured Pater’s guys without a second thought. But now--
“Ivy!” he screamed again, his voice clearly panicked as he busted through the shadows and into the dimly lit cave.
He was terrified, his eyes wide, hands shaking as he scanned the room for me. I couldn’t even move as he rushed me, looking as anxiety-ridden and pathetic as he had that day on the mountaintop when he had seen Howl for the first time.
“Ivy! Ivy! Ivy!” the guy was delusional, grabbing at my hands like I was going to save him or some shit. Nope, this fucker was on his own.
The only reason he was still around was because he had saved our asses. That’s it. Nothing else, no matter how hard he tried to convince me otherwise.
No matter how scared he looked.
“What did you do?” I asked, dodging his fumbling fingers as another set of steps thundered down the cave after him, the steps firm, heavy, and angry.
Everyone was staring at the door, animals growling, magic buzzing, teeth bared, as we waited for whatever had scared the fucking demon.
In a fuming mass of hair, a woman burst right into our cavern, stomped her way right up to Tommy and punched him so hard on the jaw that he fell to the ground. He didn’t even try to turn to smoke, he fell like a sack of potatoes.
A whimpering, whining sack of potatoes that cowered at my feet, pleading for what I could only assume was forgiveness.
“You fucking demon. You thought you could get away with that? Bastard!” she yelled, hair flailing around her as she kicked him right in the groin. “Thief,” another kick. “I should have known better than to trust a demon.”
I looked up to the woman as she flipped her hair behind her, sighing and fixing me with eyes the same color as my own. A jaw like my own.
I didn’t even recognize her.
I couldn’t. Not without the food stains and the pock-marked skin and bloodshot eyes.
“Mama?” Why were my eyes burning? My eyes should not be burning. My chest cracked open and then slammed shut, scared to reveal my heart.
“Sorry, I’m late, honey,” she sighed with another flip of her hair. “This guy seems to think he could keep you to himself. Now, who do we have to kill?”
What.
The.
Fuck?
